Allergan recognizes the important role fellows play in contributing to ophthalmology research and development. The Allergan Horizon Grant Program provides multiple awards to academic medical institutions to support fellows seeking careers in academic medicine.

How many grants will be awarded? back to top
Approximately 20 Allergan Horizon Grants will be awarded to institution fellowship programs over 2 years. These awards will fund fellowship programs that conduct clinical research in the diagnosis or pharmacological treatment of glaucoma and corneal and retinal diseases.

Who can apply for a Horizon Grant? back to top
The department chair, division chief, or fellowship director of academic medical institutions who would like support to train ophthalmic fellows in glaucoma, corneal, and retinal diseases can apply for an Allergan Horizon Grant.

Applications must be submitted to Allergan Medical Affairs by September 28, 2007.

What is required for the application? back to top
The Allergan Horizon Grant Program application must be submitted by the department chair, division chief, or fellowship director of the academic institutions. Applicants will be required to provide information about their institution and fellowship program, how the funds will be used to advance research in the above specified disease areas, a brief summary of the research program, and the educational plan for their fellows research.

How is the application submitted? back to top
Applications must be submitted to Allergan Medical Affairs no later than September 28, 2007. The application and support materials should be e-mailed to HorizonGrantApplications@allergan.com

How is the application evaluated and awarded? back to top
Grant applications will be reviewed by the Allergan grant review committee with the assistance of the Horizon Academic Advisory Board, an independent advisory board made up of experts in the fields of cornea, glaucoma, and retina. Applications will be reviewed based on the strength of the fellowship program, the clinical and research plan for the institution’s fellow, how the grant funds will be used, and activities the fellow will be engaged in while in the program. Grants will only be awarded to fellowship programs that conduct clinical research in the diagnosis or pharmacological treatment of glaucoma and corneal and retinal diseases. Horizon Academic Advisory Board members do not participate in the evaluation of applications from their own institutions.

When will the grants be announced? back to top
Grant awards will be announced at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in New Orleans in November 2007. Institutions awarded grants will be invited to attend a reception during the AAO meeting.

When will the grants be distributed? back to top
Allergan Horizon Grants will be distributed to the institution in January 2008.

How can the grant funds be used? back to top
The Allergan Horizon Grant is intended primarily for salary and research support for fellows and not for overhead, indirect, and fringe costs.

Representatives of the institutions receiving an Allergan Horizon Grant will be invited to Allergan in Irvine, California, for the Allergan Horizon Grant Awardees Forum to present A Year in Review of their fellowship program. This will take place in June 2008 to report on the 2007–2008 academic year.
